Chapter 6

Jamie realized with disgust that she was having to devote an unnatural amount of concentration to the simple routine of getting breakfast ready. She found herself intently gnawing on her lower lip while watching the toast browning under the oven broiler and tried to shake off the sensation that things were on the verge of getting out of control. She was only fixing breakfast, for heaven’s sake, not working on a solution to the problem of the national debt.

But everything seemed to be requiring undue caution this morning. It was as if she dare not relax or something would blow up in her face. Maybe this was what people meant when they said they felt as though they were walking on eggs. Even the simple act of showering and pulling on a pair of jeans and an oversize blue work shirt had taken more than the necessary amount of attention. Her hair still wasn’t right.

After several attempts in front of the mirror Jamie had abandoned her efforts, and now the dark auburn mass was clamped in an exceedingly casual twist. Tendrils were already coming loose.

It was all Cade’s fault. He had been a disturbing influence in her life since the moment she had met him.

Matters were not improving with time. They would disintegrate entirely if he ever discovered that it had been her idea, not Miss Isabel’s, to contact him with the offer of a job.

Jamie yanked the rack partway out from under the broiler, flipped the toast and shoved it back. She wondered if Cade liked peanut-butter toast for breakfast.

On the other hand, she asked herself resolutely, who cared what he liked for breakfast? He could take it or leave it. That was supposed to be part of the new arrangement. Casual. Sophisticated. Independent.

The second time around with Cade was going to be on her terms. She might not be able to resist playing with fire but she would darn well run the risks in her own way, not his. Last time he had played the tune and she had danced to his measure. This time the process was going to be reversed.

Jamie pushed her glasses more firmly onto her nose as she straightened away from the oven, and then she went to the refrigerator to find the carton of freshly ground peanut butter. The whole problem, she realized forlornly, was that it was almost impossible to be casual, sophisticated and completely independent around Cade. Take now, for instance. A part of her did care about fixing him a breakfast he would enjoy.

It made no sense at all. The man deserved absolutely no consideration from her. But telling herself that indisputable truth did not absolve her of the uneasy feeling that she had been unfair to him early this morning. That crack about telling him to do as good a job of proving Hadley Fitzgerald dead as he had done ruining the man in first place had been rather harsh. When all was said and done, it wasn’t exactly Cade’s fault that Hadley had apparently been a very shady businessman.
